Tehran to host Asian Cooperation Dialogue conference

TEHRAN, Nov. 7 (MNA) -- Tehran will host the 9th ministerial meeting of the Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) on November 8 and 9.

Foreign ministers from 31 Asian countries are expected to participate in the conference.

Prior to the official meeting an expert meeting is being held in Tehran today.

The troika meeting of ACD was held in Tehran on Saturday. The troika members are the previous, current, and future heads of ACD. Iran is the current head of the ACD, Sri Lanka was the previous one and Kuwait will be the next one.

The ACD is a continent-wide forum which aims to constitute the missing link in Asia by incorporating every Asian country and building an Asian community without duplicating other organizations or creating a bloc against others. A key principle is to consolidate Asian strengths and fortify Asia's competitiveness by maximizing the diversity and rich resources evident in Asia.

ACD ministerial meetings were held in Thailand in 2002 and 2003, China 2004, Pakistan 2005, Qatar 2006, South Korea 2007, Kazakhstan 2008, and Sri Lanka 2009.

ACD members are Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Bhutan, Russia, Tajikistan, Kuwait, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Oman, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, and United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Kyrgyzstan.

The main objectives of the ACD are as follows:

1) To promote interdependence among Asian countries in all areas of cooperation by identifying Asia's common strengths and opportunities which will help reduce poverty and improve the quality of life for Asian people whilst developing a knowledge-based society within Asia and enhancing community and people empowerment;

2) To expand the trade and financial market within Asia and increase the bargaining power of Asian countries in lieu of competition and, in turn, enhance Asia's economic competitiveness in the global market;

3) To serve as the missing link in Asian cooperation by building upon Asia's potentials and strengths through supplementing and complementing existing cooperative frameworks so as to become a viable partner for other regions;

4) To ultimately transform the Asian continent into an Asian Community, capable of interacting with the rest of the world on a more equal footing and contributing more positively towards mutual peace.
