Iranian conductor invited to lead Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra

TEHRAN, Nov. 9 (MNA) -- Tehran Symphony Orchestra (TSO) guest conductor Nader Mortezapur was invited to lead the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.

The proposal was submitted by the Qatari minister of culture, arts and heritage after Mortezapur led the Tehran Symphony Orchestra in a concert in Doha on Thursday, the Iran Music Association announced on Sunday.

The TSO performed the Iranian pieces “Bijan and Manijeh” and “Local-Like” by Samin Baghcheban and “Khorasani Song” by Arsalan Kamkar during the concert.

In addition, Maurice Jarre’s music for Moustapha Akkad’s blockbuster, “The Message”, and Beethoven’s Symphony No.5 were also in the repertoire of the Tehran Symphony Orchestra.

The performances by the Tehran Symphony Orchestra were so warmly received by Qatari Culture Minister Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari that he attended another concert along with his family on Friday night.

The concerts were part of the Iranian Cultural Week, which opened on Thursday in Doha.

The Tehran Symphony Orchestra wil reprise the concerts in Tehran’s Vahdat Hall on November 11 and 12.

Comprising 101 Western and Arab musicians, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra came into being in the summer of 2008.

The ensemble made its international debut in February 2009, performing at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC as part of the festival Arabesques: Arts of the Arab World.

Music Director of the New York Philharmonic Lorin Maazel led it in Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and orientally inflected works composed by the orchestra’s music director and resident composer, Marcel Khalife, a prominent Lebanese oud player and major musical figure in the Arab world.
