‘Iraq deal is key step for formation of national govt.’

TEHRAN, Nov. 15 (MNA) -- The recent development in Iraq is an important and constructive step for the establishment of a national government, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast said on Sunday.

On Thursday, the Iraqi Parliament elected Osama al-Nujaifi as parliament speaker, reelected Jalal Talabani as president, and renominated Nouri al-Maliki as prime minister, tasked with forming a new cabinet.

An agreement on top government posts reached late on Wednesday brought together Shias, Sunnis, and Kurds in a power-sharing arrangement similar to the previous Iraqi government.

Mehmanparast expressed hope that the new Iraqi government, through the support of the Iraqi people and the country’s political officials, would serve its citizens better and take serious measures to establish stability and security.

He also said the new government should be supported in the region and internationally.

Iran will also continue its support of the Iraqi government and people, as before, he said, and expressed hope that the two nations would make efforts to expand their comprehensive ties.

In addition, the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee issued a statement expressing support for the power-sharing deal made by Iraq’s political groups.
