China, U.S. agree N. Korea's shelling on S. Korea 'very undesirable

BEIJING, Nov. 23 Kyodo -
China and the United States agreed Tuesday that North Korea's fatal artillery
attack on a South Korean island is ''very undesirable'' and urged the two sides
to exercise restraint so as not to escalate tension on the Korean Peninsula.
''We both share the view that such conflict is very undesirable, and I
expressed them the desire that restraint be exercised on all sides, and I think
we agree on that,'' Stephen Bosworth, U.S. special representative for North
Korea policy, told journalists after meeting with senior Chinese officials in
Beijing.
Bosworth said the United States ''strongly condemns this aggression on the part
of North Korea,'' and that Washington ''stands firmly with our allies'' in
dealing with the aftermath of the incident.
Asked whether the United States intends to raise North Korea's purported
uranium-enrichment program at the U.N. Security Council, the special envoy
said, ''That's something we are going to look at'' because Washington considers
such action to violate a U.N. resolution on the North.
Bosworth said he and Chinese officials agreed on ''the essential need to
continue coordination and consultation'' over the uranium-enrichment program
and on how best to resume the six-party talks on the North's nuclear programs.
''We agreed that a multilateral approach to the problems of North Korea remains
essential,'' he said, referring to the stalled denuclearization talks involving
the two Koreas, Japan, China, the United States and Russia.
Earlier Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei said that Bosworth
would hold separate talks with Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai and special
representative for Korean Peninsula affairs Wu Dawei during a two-day visit to
the Chinese capital through Wednesday on the final leg of a three-nation Asian
tour that has taken him to Seoul and Tokyo for talks on North Korean issues.
Bosworth said he has ''no plans'' to visit North Korea on his way back to the
United States.
