FOREIGN MINISTRY INTENSIFYING DIPLOMACY TO SUPPORT NATIONAL FOOD RESILIENCE

Bandung, Indonesia, Aug. 6 (ANTARA) - Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda said his ministry was intensifying its diplomatic efforts to help the nation achieve food resilience, among other things, by proposing the discussion of the current food crisis in United Nations and other multilateral meetings.
Indonesia was continuously makng efforts to make the food crisis and ways to overcome it a world agenda because the crisis was threatening global stability, Wirajuda said.
Speaking at a political seminar themed "Optimizing the Role of International Politics in Improving National Food Resilience" here Wednesday, the minister said the skyrocketing oil prices had made it more difficult for developing countries to meet their food needs.
On the other hand, he said, agrarian countries such as Indonesia had an opportunity to produce food to meet world demand.
He also said Middle Eastern countries were currently eager to invest in the food production sector in Central Africa, Central Asia and Southeast Asia.
"This phenomenon is obviously an opportunity for Indonesia to meet not only its own food needs but also to export food, for which it needs to attract investors in the agricultural sector," he said.
Wirayuda also warned that biofuel development programs must not adversely affect food supply to the public.
The current food crisis had caused the number of poor in the world population of 6.4 billion to increase by 100 million to 854 million this year, he said.
Other speakers at the seminar organized by the foreign affairs ministry, included Indonesian Ambassador to Italy Susanto Sutoyo, who is concurrently Indonesia's representative to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), FAO Assistant Representative in Jakarta Benny Sormin, agriculture observer HS Dillon and rector of Padjajaran University Dr Ganjar Kurnia.
