N. Korea warns of consequences from U.S. carrier dispatch to Yellow Sea
PYONGYANG, Nov. 27 Kyodo -
North Korea on Saturday criticized a U.S. plan to deploy a nuclear-powered
aircraft carrier in a joint naval exercise with South Korea starting Sunday in
the Yellow Sea and signaled retaliation against such action.
''If the U.S. brings its carrier to the West Sea of Korea at last, no one can
predict the ensuing consequences,'' the official Korean Central News Agency
said, referring to the deployment of the George Washington carrier strike group
in the drill in the wake of North Korea's deadly shelling of a South Korean
island on Tuesday.
''The U.S. has so far obstructed the solution of any issues related to peace
and stability while being keen only to keep the military tension on the Korean
Peninsula,'' KCNA said in a commentary.
On Thursday, the North's Korean People's Army delegation to the inter-Korean
truce village of Panmunjeom said the KPA will launch a ''second and third
strong physical retaliatory blow'' against South Korea unless it stops drills
targeting North Korea.
North Korea has said its attack of Yeonpyeong Island, which left four South
Korean people dead and 18 others wounded, was in response to Seoul's firing
shells earlier Tuesday into an area in the two Koreas' contested western sea
border that the North claims as its territorial waters.
''The counter-shelling...was a resolute and proper retaliation against the
reckless military provocation of the enemy,'' the commentary said.
