Japan will not accept China's proposal to hold 6-way talks+
TOKYO, Nov. 29 Kyodo -
Japan will not accept China's proposal to hold an emergency meeting of the
heads of delegations to the six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program,
the top government spokesman said Monday.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku said at a news conference that Japan is
currently focusing on working closely with South Korea and the United States to
address the rising tension on the Korean Peninsula and whether to go ahead with
the stalled six-way talks will also be decided in coordination with them.
Sengoku said the multilateral talks, chaired by China, would not be fruitful as
long as North Korea does not show signs of stopping provocative acts.
Following North Korea's deadly artillery attack last week on a South Korean
island, China on Sunday called for the resumption of talks among the two
Koreas, China, Japan, Russia and the United States.
China has said the envisioned meeting would focus on the recent growing tension
on the Korean Peninsula, not North Korean denuclearization issues.
South Korea and the United States so far appear reluctant to take part in the
six-party talks, which were last held in December 2008.
