AMIEN: THREE SOLUTIONS TO OVERCOME CRISIS IN INDONESIA
Jambi, Aug 6 (ANTARA) - Former Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Amien Rais said there were only three solutions to overcome the current economic, social and cultural crisis in Indonesia.
The first solution is for the government to seriously implement people's economy, the second is to evaluate the performance all foreign contractors handling our oil and gas sectors, and the last solution is to revoke all forest concessions, he said when reviewing the book on "Urgent Agenda of the Nation, Save Indonesia," on the sidelines of a meeting of the national mandate party's (PAN) Youths Front here on Wednesday.
"I personally see the three solutions as the best. If the government is serious enough in implementing the three agendas, hopefully this nation will be better, poverty and unemployment rates will decline and ecological destruction of the environment will be easily minimized," said Amien who was general chairman of Muhammadiyah organization and former chairman of the national awakening party (PAN).
According to him, Indonesian nation was currently controlled by a foreign power which had its grip form on Indonesia's natural resources like oil and gas, coal, uranium, forest and plantation produce, half of which is in the hands of Malaysian businessmen.
In fact, cell phone operator owned by this nation like Indosat, Telkom and Indonesian airlines were dominated by Singapore.
"No wonder that we as Indonesian nation wishing to open direct flight routes like the Lampung-Palembang-Jambi-Padang-Medan-Kalimantan route should get a permit from Singapore. It means that our air space is under the domination of a foreign power," he said.
A debt ridden Indonesian nation could be said to suffer from a curse of foreign debts. Now Indonesia's foreign debt had reached US$148 billion the equivalence of Rp150.000 trillion.
"We have no pride anymore, as this nation has already been ridden with foreign loans, thus becoming the people's responsibility," he said.
In the meantime, Amien said the government under the leadership of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono could not do much to make a drastic change.
When many roads could not be repaired, the reason often given was that the Public Works Ministry could not do it on account of lack of funds.
A similar reason was given when a planned 20 percent of the state budget could be met. Again 'No money' was the last answer from the authorities.
When bird flu epidemic hit the country, it could not be overcome. The Health Minister said there was no money. "Therefore I became confused in the sense what this nation could do," Amien said.
Flanked by Jambi Governor Zulkifli Nurdin, Amien Rais also attended the installation of Merangin district head/deputy head H Halim-Hasan Basri Hasan supported by PAN part.
