PRESIDENT : RI SHOULD FIGHT FOR JUSTICE IN WTO
Jakarta, Aug 7 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Indonesia should fight for justice in the World Trade Organization (WTO) so that its agricultural products would gain a proper place in world markets.
Speaking to heads of post-graduate programs at state universities across the country at the State Palace here on Thursday, Yudhoyono said Indonesia was frequently a victim of an unfair world trade system.
"We should also fight the unfair trade system so that our farmers can also enjoy the world food price hikes," the head of state said.
He added that food exports and imports happened in all countries including Indonesia, and disparities between demand and supply also happened anywhere, including in Indonesia.
"It is a reality beyond our power to control," Yudhoyono said, adding that at the WTO meeting last week in Geneva, Switzerland, developing countries were at odds with developed countries over the agricultural subsidies of developed countries.
The developing countries also protested against the European Union ban on the entry of agricultural commodities into European countries.
President Yudhoyono said the government had given seed and fertilizer subsidy to farmers to increase their production.
Yudhoyono said Indonesia's population at present was 230 million people and the number would reach 300 million in 2024.
"Therefore, we have to continuously pursue food resilience policies," he said.
Around 136 heads of post-graduate program at their meeting in Bogor from August 5-7 recommended a number of measures on food resilience effort.
Some of the measures were food diversification, farmers consolidation, and expansion of farmers' access to credit service.
In his address, President Yudhoyono expressed hope that the leaders of post graduate program would continue to improve the quality of education in an effort to solve various problems the state was facing.
