FOREIGN TOURISTS ARRIVE IN WAMENA FOR BALIEM VALLEY FESTIVAL
Jayapura, Aug 7 (ANTARA) - Hundreds of foreign tourists have arrived in Wamena, the capital of Jayawijaya district in Papua, to savor the local cultural attractions to be offered by the Baliem Valley Festival to begin on Friday (Aug 8).
Most hotels in Wamena were on Thursday already fully booked by tourists from different countries.
According to sources in the festival's organizing committee, the number of foreign tourists coming to Wamena for the annual festival was increasing from year to year.
This year's Baliem Valley Festrival is to take place from August 8 to 13 and will feature various cultural and art performances including carnival floats.
The high point of the festival will be a colossal show of the cultural life of the different indigenous tribes living in the villages in the Baliem Valley such as the Dani, Lani and Yali tribes.
All the tribes have sent coningents to participate in the festivalh with their charactiristic attributes, kotekas (penis gourds), artisic and craftsmen's paraphernelia.
The Baliem Festival provides outsiders a unique opportunity to witness the rich culture of the people of Papua's hinterland.
The Baliem valley is inhabited by three main clans, namely the Dani, Yali and Lani. They have different physical features,
cultures and ways of life as well as unique customs.
Many kinds of communal actvity of the different tribes will be demosntrated by the stone-age people such as a Mock War, Pig Feast, Earth Cooking ceremony, traditional mouth harp music performance. .
Spectators will be able to distinguish the different tribes among others from the way they are dressed. The Dani only use small penis gourds/penis covers, the Lani use bigger kotekas, they are much bigger in physique than the average Dani while the Yali wear long, slender kotekas held upright by rattan belts around their waist.
By attending the Baliem festival, one will have a great chance to know and learn the culture of each tribe without having to visit their settlements deep in the hinterland of West Papua.
