INDONESIANS GAIN ICT SKILLS AT TAIWAN-SPONSORED E-LEARNING CENTERS
Jakarta, August 7 (ANTARA) - Some 3,500 Indonesian students, small- and medium-scale entrepreneurs (SMEs), government officials and business leaders developed their ICT (information and communcation technology) skills by joining training programs at six e-learning centers sponsored by the Taiwan government in three Indonesian cities, a Taiwan economic affairs official said,
"The program to transfer ICT skills proved to be very useful for those who participated in the programs," which were held in Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta, deputy director of the economic division of the Taiwan Economic and Trade Office (TETO) Lester Leu said here Thursday.
"After taking part in the e-learning program, some students and SMEs started to access technology and they also got better livelihood opportunities. Many students and SMEs immediately started their e-commerce both for the domestic and international markets," he said.
Leu said Taiwan had established 6 e-learning centers in Indonesia : 2 in Jakarta, another 2 in Bandung (West Java ), and the rest in Yogyakarta. The first center was set up in 2006 and the last one in May 2008.
"The centers aim to bridge the gap in and enhance ICT capabilities in Indonesia. Some specializations occur in e-learning centers, such as focus on women, SMEs or children's participatin," he said.
The centers were actually not only training the students, women, SMEs, officials, and business people but also trained teachers so that the skills would eventually be passed on to wider circles of people.
"Every year, we also invite ICT experts from Indonesia to Taiwan to exchange experience and competence. There is an annual competition in e-commerce utilization and the winners are invited to Taiwan as well," he said.
By the end of this year, Taiwan expected to open 41 e-learning centers in seven developing countries under a programs approved by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
The Taiwan government proposed an APEC Digital Opportunity Center (ADOC) initiative during the 2003 APEC leadership summit held in Thailand, and the goal was to use the advanced ICT experience in Taiwan to assist other APEC member states to upgrade their technology capacities.
Since the ADOC programs proved to be successful in Indonesia, Leu hoped there would be a second phase in the initiative which would be discussed further in the ADOC Week 2008 set for September 29 to October 4 in Taipei.
