Iran-5+1 talks to focus on common ground

TEHRAN, Dec. 8 (MNA) -- Iran’s main negotiator, Saeed Jalili, said the 5+1 group has agreed that the next round of talks will focus on “common ground for cooperation.”

“Both sides have agreed that the talks will be about cooperation on common ground,” Jalili said on Tuesday after the end of the two-day talks with the representatives of the six major powers in Geneva, which had resumed after a 14-month hiatus.

In this round of the talks, Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili represented Iran and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton represented the countries of the 5+1 group (the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France, and Germany).

The two sides have agreed to hold the next round of talks in Istanbul in late January.

The next round of negotiations will focus on finding common ground for cooperation, but Iran will not negotiate on its inalienable rights, including uranium enrichment, Jalili said.

“We will not talk about Iran’s nuclear rights, and Iran will never accept pressure,” he added.

Ashton read out a statement after the end of the talks, describing the talks as detailed and substantive.

Reuters published the statement on Tuesday.

Following is the text of the statement:

We have had nearly two days of detailed substantive talks, focusing on the Iranian nuclear program and the need for Iran to comply with its international obligations.

The countries I represent are united in seeking a resolution of the international community’s concerns, regarding Iran’s nuclear program which is the central purpose of these talks.

We recognize Iran’s rights but insist it fulfils its obligations. We are ready to address and seek common ground also on other issues of mutual interest.

We and Iran agreed to a continuation of these talks in late January in Istanbul where we plan to discuss practical ideas and ways of cooperating toward resolution of our core concerns about the nuclear issue.
