Cleric says talks with G5+1 raised status of Iran
TEHRAN, Dec. 11 (MNA)-- Tehran Friday prayer leader Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati commented that the recent talks between Tehran and the major powers improved the international status of the Islamic Republic of Iran because Iran did not give in to the powers’ pressure.
“Negotiations with the 5+1 group raised the status of the Islamic Republic in the world and placed the West in a passive position,” Jannati said on Friday.
Iran and the 5+1 group (the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France, and Germany) held talks in Geneva from December 6 to 7.
According to Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili, who represented Iran at the talks, the 5+1 group agreed that the next round of talks, which will be held in Istanbul in late January, will focus on “common ground for cooperation.” Iranian officials regard the agreement as great success because it shows that the nuclear issue will not be the focus of the future talks.
Jannati praised the performance of the Iranian delegation during the talks, saying that Saeed Jalili made it clear that Iran would not give in to their pressure.
He went on to say that Iran’s top negotiator also made it clear that Iran’s nuclear program will not be the issue anymore, and if the talks are going to be continued, the global issues like the international peace and security, nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and justice should be discussed.
Jannati also added that the West has now realized that making threats, imposing sanctions, and carrying out terrorist actions against Iran are not effective, and such actions will only strengthen the Iranian nation’s determination to reach its goals in using nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
