‘5+1 must allay Iran’s concerns about nuclear disarmament’

TEHRAN, Dec. 12 (MNA) -- Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said that the 5+1 group must allay Iran’s concerns over the issue of global nuclear disarmament in the next round of talks.

Iran and the 5+1 group (the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France, and Germany) held talks in Geneva from December 6 to 7.

According to Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili, who represented Iran at the talks, the 5+1 group agreed that the next round of talks, which will be held in Istanbul in late January, will focus on “common ground for cooperation.”

Talking to reporters at a press conference here on Saturday, Larijani said, “The issue of nuclear disarmament is a very significant matter, which has raised great concerns at the international level.”

“We also have some concerns which must be allayed,” he stated.

Larijani added that Iran has always taken a firm and clear stance on this issue and seriously pursues the matter.

Commenting on the previous round of talks, Larijani said that the 5+1 group made some confidence-destroying moves, adding, “We hope they act more wisely this time.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, he stated that if the other party persists in using negotiations as a tool, confidence will be destroyed.

He also expressed satisfaction that certain issues were raised in the previous meeting and some issues were left to be discussed during later rounds of talks.

There is no ambiguity in Iran’s nuclear program, but certain countries are seeking to raise peripheral issues in this regard, the Iranian parliament speaker said.
