U.S. has made world unsafe: Iran’s defense chief
TEHRAN, Dec. 14 (MNA) -- Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said that the U.S. has made the world unsafe through its interventionist policies.
“The U.S. government’s interventionist policy has made the world unsafe,” Vahidi said on Monday in response to the recent remarks by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates about Iran.
“The regional nations are not worried about the Islamic Iran, rather they are concerned about the hawkish American regime,” he said.
“Iran’s policies are pacifistic and in line with the cause of peace and security in the region, but the U.S. hawkish, hegemonistic, and interventionist policies have caused tension in the world particularly in the Middle East,” he stated.
The minister said Iran has friendly relationship with regional countries but Washington seeks to cause rift among nations in the region and undermine Iran’s good relations with its neighbors.
Vahidi went on to say that such remarks are made to justify the U.S. “illegitimate” presence in the region and prepare the ground for the sale of more arms to regional countries.
He also reassured that Iran’s defense capabilities are meant for the promotion of peace in the region.
According to the Reuters, Robert Gates has claimed Iran’s neighbors are clearly concerned about what he called Tehran’s “aggressive behavior”. Gates also said neighbors support sanctions aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear program.
“You can see the general support in the region for applying the sanctions and for doing what we can to make the sanctions effective and try to influence the Iranian government to walk away from their nuclear weapons program,” Gates told reporters on Friday.
Previously, Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri had said the U.S. defense secretary does not have a clear understanding of Iran’s defense strategy.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s defense policies are based on certain rules and doctrines, and superficial persons like U.S. defense secretary do not have a proper understanding of them,” Jazayeri said.
