Iran`s Culture Ministry honors Iranian film “Mokhtarnameh” cast and crew

TEHRAN, Dec. 14 (MNA) -- The Ministry of Culture and Islamic guidance paid tribute to the cast and crew of the Iranian TV series “Mokhtarnameh” during a ceremony held in Tehran on Sunday evening.

The series is about an uprising organized by Mokhtar Saqafi after the events of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, to take revenge against the killers of Imam Hussein (AS).

An all-Iranian cast is appearing in “Mokhtarnameh”, which is directed by Davud Mirbaqeri, who previously directed the TV series “Imam Ali (AS)”.

The director Mirbaqeri took about eight years to complete “Mokhtarnameh”. Eleven parts of the serial have been aired on Channel 1 of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) over the past three months.

Culture minister Mohammad Hosseini, Deputy Culture Minister for Artistic Affairs Hamid Shahabadi, Deputy Culture Minister for Cinematic Affairs Javad Shamaqdari, Culture Ministry Supervision and Evaluation Office (SEO) Director Alireza Sajjadpur and several members of the cast and crew took part in the ceremony.

“The story centers on Mokhtar and his character, and we all intended to accompany Mokhtar on his journey as he confronted the historical events along the way. But some, especially TV director Ezzatollah Zarghami, recommended that we put the Ashura events on the sidelines,” said director Mirbaqeri at the ceremony.

“And now when I watch the program, I think it is a pity that the Karbala and Ashura events were not depicted in the series. Of course, I must admit that it would have been a very difficult and complex part of the series,” he added.

However, the decision to depict scenes of Hazrat Abbas (AS), also known as Qamar-e Bani Hashem and Hazrat Abolfazl, in “Mokhtarnameh” provoked outrage among clerics over the past few weeks.

“We were confronting a fact that is unique in the world for its cultural spirit. We were facing a potential in history that can evolve around the world. “Mokhtarnameh was made based on commonalities and we adduced adequate facts to make it relevant to all the Muslim sects. We are not making the series for only Iranian viewers. Mokhtar and his logic make it sensible for everyone,” director Mirbaqeri added.

Actor Fariborz Arabnia who plays the role of Mokhtar next made a brief speech.

“There are so many words of thanks to be said, but without exaggeration, I can only thank God that I had the opportunity to take part in this project. We have been on a long journey with many good friends throughout these years.

“Making a historical project, especially a religious one, is much harder than making a social documentary and I believe that Mokhtarnameh will be better understood with the passage of time.

The ceremony was followed by a short speech delivered by culture minister Hosseini, who said “The character of Mokhtar, as the individual who takes revenge on the killers of Imam Hussein (AS), invokes feelings of gratification through justice in people. Depicting these scenes so as to convey these genuine emotions and feelings to the viewers was a painstaking task.”

“Mokhtarnameh is a brilliant series. People do not have sufficient detailed information about the history of the advent of Islam, but when history is narrated through art people can follow it, making it more influential,”

“This huge project took 8 or 9 years to accomplish. Some might have their criticism but it is unfair if we do not adequately praise this influential TV series,” he added.

The ceremony was brought to an end with the presentation of awards to the cast and crew.
