PRESIDENT: RESULTS OF INNOVATIONS, RESEARCH MUST BENEFIT SOCIETY

Jakarta, Aug 8 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the results of innovations and research should be applied for the benefit of the common people.
"Every research should be useful to society. Our challenge is how the results of innovations and research can be applied for the people's benefit," President Yudhoyono said in his address at a function to mark the 13th National Technology Awakening Day at the State Palace here on Friday.
Following the surge in the prices of flour and soybean, Yudhoyono said efforts to make innovations enabling the replacement of wheat and soybean in the people's diet should be stepped up, he said.
"For example, we needed at least 15 years to accustom Indonesian people to eating instant noodle instead of rice, and the results of the research should be packaged and introduced to the people," the president said.
The head of state admitted that the world population was continuing to increase from time to time and consequently demand for food and energy would rise as well.
"To solve this problem we have to have to follow a different life style by saving energy and technological intervention through research and innovations," the president said.
He added that to solve the domestic problem, the government had set up six national research priorities, namely food resilience, renewable energy development, transportation management and technology, defense technology, health technology, and information technology.
Concluding his address, the president called on all parties to positively respond to innovative ideas and try to develop them without hesitation.
"Imagination is said to be the embryo of major inventions. Therefore, we must become a nation that excels in sciente and technology," the head of state said.
Accompanied by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, the president on the occasion inaugurated a technology and research exhibition at MGK Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.
Present on the occasion were also Research and Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa, Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono, and several other ministers.
