FLOODS AFFECT OVER 187,000 HECTARES OF PADDY FIELDS
Jakarta, Aug 8 (ANTARA) - The Agriculture Ministry said floods had affected a total of 187,056 hectares of rice farms in the January-August period this year.
Director for plantation protection of the Agriculture Ministry's Directorate General of Food Crops, Ati Wasiati, said here on Friday that about 66,609 hectares of the affected rice fields failed to yield harvestable rice.
"The acreage of rice fields affected by floods this year is smaller than in the same period a year earlier," she said.
She said that in 2007 a total of 210,470 hectares of paddy fields were hit by floods, of which 55,884 hectares failed to yield harvestable rice.
She said the main areas affected by floods were the provinces of Central Sualwesi (5,705 hectares), South Sulawesi (4,585 h), East Kalimantan (3,393 h), West Sumatra (2,573 h) and North Sumatra (3,223 h).
She said that acreage of paddy fields affected by floods in this year's planting season was smaller than in the same period in 2007 which reached 58,407 hectares but the acreage of fields that proved fruitless was wider this year, namely 15,207 hectares.
Referring to the impact of the floods on the national production target, the agriculture ministry's official said that the government had taken into account the drought, flood and other factors such as pest in setting its rice production target.
But she said that the government's target to increase national rice production by 5 percent this year was not likely to be achieved and would have to be lowered to 2 percent.***
