OVER 180,000 HECTARES OF RICE FIELDS AFFECTED BY DROUGHT

Jakarta, Aug 8 (ANTARA) - The Agriculture Ministry said droughts had affected at least 183,000 hectares of rice fields in the country in the January-August 2008 period.
Director for crop protection of the Food Crops Directorate General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ati Wasiati said here on Friday, about 16,470 hectares of the 183,000 hectares of paddy fields failed to yield harvestable rice.
"The acreage of rice fields which were affected by drought or floods this year is smaller than last year," she said.
In 2007, the dry spells had affected 344,226 hectares of rice fields of which 39,812 hectares did not yield harvestable rice.
In the dry season in the April-August 2008 period, a total of 169,274 hectares of rice fields were affected of which 14,286 hectares proved to be fruitless.
She said the dry spells had mostly affected rice farms in the provinces of West Java (80,377 hectares), Banten (45,565 h), Central Java (24,400 h), East Java (8,465 h ) and North Sumatra (6,421 h).
Referring to the impact of the droughts on the national production target, the agriculture ministry's official said that the government had taken into account the droughts, floods and other factors such as pests in setting its rice production target.
But she said that the government's target to increase national rice production by 5 percent this year was not likely to be achieved and would have to be lowered to two percent.
