Salehi to officially replace Mottaki as acting Iran`s FM

TEHRAN, Dec. 18 (MNA)-- Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Director Ali Akbar Salehi will officially start his job as the acting foreign minister today.

The ceremony will be attended by First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi, Manouchehr Mottaki and other Foreign Ministry officials.

Salehi, who is also currently one of the country’s vice presidents, formerly served as Iran’s permanent ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Salehi, fluent in English and Arabic languages, holds a PhD from MIT University. He was also the chancellor of Sharif University in the 1980s.

Salehi will accompany President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in his visit to Istanbul where ECO leaders meet for a summit on December 20-21.

In a decree issued on Monday, President Ahmadinejad dismissed Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki from his post and appointed Salehi as the acting foreign minister. Ahmadinejad gave no explanation for the decision.

Mottaki held the post of foreign minister since Ahmadinejad won the office in 2005.

Mottaki, a career diplomat, served as Iran’s ambassador to Japan and Turkey. Before being appointed as foreign minister in 2005 he was elected lawmaker from the Tehran constituency.
