Konya experiences different anniversary for Iranian poet on Ashura

TEHRAN, Dec. 18 (MNA) -- Konya, home to the shrine of Iranian mystic and poet Molana Jalal ad-Din Rumi (1207-1273) experienced a different commemoration ceremony this year as a result of coinciding with the events of Ashura.

December 17th marks the death anniversary of Molana who is buried in Konya, drawing hundreds of enthusiasts to his shrine every year during these days.

A group of Turkish cultural and political officials attended the ceremony held on Thursday evening at the Mevlana Foundation, during which Turkey’s Culture and Tourism Minister Ertugrul Gunay delivered a short speech.

Culture minister expressed his condolences on the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and a number of his followers on Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, and said that for every free individual, every day is Ashura and everywhere is Karbala, holy city which holds the shrine of the martyred Imam Hussein.

He said that the commemoration needs not to be limited to only one day, but we must always be ready to help in the support of our religion.

Imam Hussein (AS) was martyred while fighting oppression and in order to preserve his religion, he said, adding that one needs love and faith to be able to understand Ashura, Imam Hussein (AS) and Imam Ali (AS).
