Iranian MPs to meet Ahmadinejad on subsidy reform plan
TEHRAN, Dec. 22 (MNA) -- Iranian Parliamentarians will meet with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the near future to discuss issues related to the implementation of the subsidy reform plan.
The subsidy reform plan went into effect on Sunday in line with a directive issued by President Ahmadinejad.
The subsidy reform plan calls for the subsidies on fuel, electricity, and certain goods to be cut over the course of five years.
Based on the data released on Sunday, the price of subsidized gasoline, which was 1,000 rials (about 9.6 U.S. cents) per liter, rose to 4,000 rials per liter. If customers need more gasoline, they can buy unsubsidized gasoline at a price of 7,000 rials per liter. Customers are only allowed to purchase 60 liters of gasoline per month at the subsidized price of 4000 rials.
On Sunday, 175 MPs issued a statement thanking the president and his economic team for implementing the plan, saying it is an indication of the country’s economic stability and efficient management.
But later some MPs said the rise in the prices of fuels particularly gasoline was too sharp which goes against the Majlis ratification.
Majlis Economic Committee Chairman Gholamreza Mesbahi-Moqaddam has said he did not predict such a sharp rise in the price of gasoline. “We had not predicted that the price of gasoline would rise to 7,000 rials (a litter),” he told on Tuesday.
“The committee was not informed about the price rise to this extent,” he said.
According to the law, the subsidies on fuels should be phased out over the course of five years, but it seems that the administration seeks to liberalize prices sooner, he commented.
He also announced that MPs will meet with the economy minister on Wednesday to ask questions about the procedure used for raising the prices of fuels.
