HUNDREDS OF MV MALOLI PASSENGERS STRANDED IN KUPANG

Kupang, Indonesia, Aug 9 (ANTARA) - Hundreds of passengers of the MV Maloli headed for Kisar and Ambon have been stranded at Kupang's Tenau Port in East Nusa Tenggara since Tuesday (August 5, 2008), a port official said on condition of anonymity on Saturday.
The official said the ship was prohibited by Tenau Port administrator from sailing to Kisar and Ambon because it was overloaded.
"The MV Maloli has a capacity to carry 300 passengers but it is in reality holding around 700 people and therefore the port administrator forbids it from traveling to Kisar and Ambon for the sake of safety," the official said.
He added that weather condition at East Nusa Tenggara waters at present had also contributed to the delay.
Meanwhile, one of the passengers who was identified as Ms Letelay said she was annoyed at the port but remained unsure when the ship would be permitted to sail off the port.
"On Wednesday and Thursday the port administrator, Pieter HB Fina came and told us that the ship was forbidden to leave for Kisar because the number of passengers exceeded the permitted capacity," MS Letelay said.
