POLICE TAKE DOWN "OPM" FLAG AT "INDIGENOUS DAY" GATHERING IN WAMENA
Jayapura, Indonesia, Aug 9 (ANTARA) - Police in Wamena. capital of Jayawijaya district, fired warning shots into the air to take down and confiscate a separatist "Free Papua Organization " (OPM) flag that had been hoisted by a crowd observing "Indigenous People Day" (Hari Pribumi) on Saturday, sources in Wamena reported.
The OPM's "morning star" flag had been raised side by side with the Indonesian national and United Nations flags on a field, about two kilometers from the center of Wamnea town.
Wamena police officers hauled down the OPM flag after it had flown for about 15 minutes and after firing warning shots into the air to keep the crowd under control.
There was some panic among the people who had gathered at the spot for the flag-hoisting activity when the police fired the shots but they did not disperse.
The chief infrormation officer of the Papua provincial police headquarters in Jayapura and the Jayawijaya distirct police chief did not answer phone calls from the Antara bureau in Jayapura for confirmation and more details on the incident in Wamena which happened at around 14:00 hours local time.
