PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES ENERGY EFFICIENCY MOVEMENT
Jakarta, Aug 10 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono announced the National Energy and Water Efficiency Movement in the National Monument (Monas) square here on Sunday.
"We know that oil and fuel are becoming more and more expensive and electricity subsidies are becoming higher and higher. We are facing clean water shortages in a number of regions and Indonesia is still classified as a country which is wasteful in using energy and water," the president told about 5,000 people attending the morning gthering function.
He said that the people were virtually unwilling to see fuel oil and electricity prices to continuously increase and disproportionate subsidies to keep on burdening the state budget.
The president said he had the target that the government's rank and file would cut their energy and water consumption by 30 percent.
"Surely we can. We should not be pessimistic. We surely are able to control it and therefore we should not merely get here together," the president said.
He cited as an example the presidential palace, the cabinet secretariat office and the state secretariat building which were already able to reduce (their energy consumption) by 31.7 percent last May and June.
He said that if with the world fuel oil price of US$120 a barrel Indonesia was able to save on energy use by about 20 to 30 percent, the subsidy in the state budget could be reduced by about Rp45-70 trillion.
"If in the early stage of this movement we can only carry out half of it, we can still save some Rp20 trillion," he said.
On the occasion, the president also asked the energy and water efficiency task force to work well and report the results of its observation each month.
The function was also attended by Mrs Ani Yudhoyono, Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa, Research and Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman and Transportation Minister Jusman Syafi'i Djalaml.
