Iran hands ECO presidency over to Turkey

TEHRAN, Dec. 25 (MNA)--Iranian President Ahmadinejad handed the presidency of ECO over to Turkish President Abdullah Gul in an official ceremony held in Istanbul on Thursday.

Reporting on Iran’s performance during its two-year presidency, Ahmadinejad said several meetings have been held over the past two years in the areas of trade, investment, transportation, energy, mining, the environment, agriculture, tourism, human resources, insurance, and health.

The plans for regional rail and road transportation corridors were finalized during the presidency of Iran, he noted, adding that the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul freight train was launched during this period.

ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey with the aim of promoting economic, technical, and cultural cooperation among member states. In 1992, seven other countries, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, joined the organization.
