Iranian writer "Al-e Ahmad" patrimony in Tehran obtained

TEHRAN, Dec. 25 (MNA) -- Tehran’s Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Department (TCHTHD) officially purchased the house in which two prominent Iranian authors, Shams and Jalal Al-e Ahmad, were born and lived.

The house, dating back to the Qajar dynasty (1794 - 1925), belonged to the two brothers’ father and was inherited from their grandfather Ahmad.

The property was registered on Iran’s National Heritage List on October 17, 2004. TCHTHD bought it for 6.4b rials (about $618,000) from Jalal’s nephew, Mehdi Al-e Ahmad, the home’s last resident.

Cultural heritage experts priced the house and TCHTHD paid the money, said Mehdi Al-e Ahmad who occupied the house until last Saturday.

Jalal Al-e-Ahmad (1923-1969) was a prominent Iranian writer, thinker, and social and political critic. He is the author of the acclaimed essay “Plagued by the West” (also known as “Westoxification”), in which the West is portrayed as the source of all major problems confronting Islamic countries.

Jalal wrote many novels and short stories such as “The School Principal”, “By the Pen”, “The Setar”, “Of Our Suffering”, and “Someone Else’s Child”.

Jalal’s younger brother Shams (died December 4, 2010 at the age of 81) was also a cultural figure who worked for Kayhan and Ettelaat newspapers after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. He wrote many books during his lifetime including “From Brother’s Eyes”, “The Cradle” and “Aqiqeh”.
