Tehran, Ankara seek closer security cooperation

TEHRAN, Dec. 25 (MNA) -- Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar and his Turkish counterpart Besir Atalay called for promotion of security ties.

“Iran is ready to expand its cooperation with Turkey in order to implement the provisions of the final statement of today’s meeting of the ECO member states’ interior ministers,” Najjar said at a meeting with Besir Atalay on the sidelines of the ministerial meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization countries in Istanbul on Friday.

He also called for expansion of bilateral security cooperation to maintain security in Iran-Turkey common borders.

Atalay expressed satisfaction with the current trend of security cooperation between Tehran and Ankara.

He also called for a meeting of deputy interior ministers of Iran and Turkey in the near future to follow up the implementation of bilateral security agreements.

The two sides emphasized that they would spare no effort to facilitate the enforcement of the provisions of the final statement of the ECO ministerial meeting.

The statement has called terrorism a major threat to the regional peace and security, urging the ECO members to campaign collectively against drug trafficking, terrorism, and organized crimes.

ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey with the aim of promoting economic, technical, and cultural cooperation among member states. In 1992, seven other countries, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, joined the organization.
