'Iran`s Intelligence Ministry contained post-poll unrest by monitoring emails’
TEHRAN, Dec. 26 (MNA) -- Iranian Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi said the Intelligence Ministry succeeded to contain the political unrest that followed the June 2009 presidential election through monitoring the emails exchanged between the protestors.
“Email was a tool used during the last year’s sedition, and the intelligence service could control many dimensions of the last year’s sedition by closely monitoring the email addresses,” Moslehi said at a conference on the Iranian expatriates’ achievements at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran on Saturday.
He also highlighted the importance of encouraging Iranian expatriates to establish security cooperation with the government in order to prevent foreign intelligence services from taking advantage of them to carry out their plans against the Islamic Republic.
The minister said many Iranian emigrants are living in the countries which are the enemies of Iran and possess powerful intelligence services, so the Iranian government should take measures to prevent the Iranians from falling into their traps.
Moslehi also emphasized that the Iranian government should try to win the confidence of the Iranian expatriates through promotion of national identity, values and beliefs that all Iranians share, otherwise if the Iranians who live in other countries feel that they are regarded merely as a tool, their confidence in the Iranian government will be undermined.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the senior intelligence official pointed to the opposition groups based in foreign countries, saying many Iranians who live out of the country do not support the opposition groups.
The number of Iranian expatriates who are the opponents of the system is limited, but the foreign intelligence services have provided them with facilities and equipment to help them make their voices widely heard, he explained.
