PRESIDENT: RELIGIOUS PROPAGATION IMPORTANT FOR NATONAL PROGRESS

Jakarta, Aug 10 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that religious propagation needs to be developed to improve the life of the nation, both physically and spiritually.

In his keynote speech on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Assyafi'iyah, and the 27th anniversary of the Taklim Council Contact Body (BKMT/Islamic studies) at the Senayan Sports Stadium in Jakarta on Sunday, the Head of State said religious propagation is very important in building a noble national character.

"By propagation, we build an Islamic religious life to develop full self-confidence, optimism and positive thinking," he said, adding that especially this year the nation has observed the 100th National Awakeing anniversary, 10th Reforms anniversary, as well as the 63rd Indonesian Independence anniversary.

In the event, also attended by some 1,200 Assyafi'yah members of 31 provinces in the country, the President reiterated that Indonesia as a predominantly Moslem country needs to build a peaceful Islamic image, far from violence, and peace-loving.

He also touched on an impression he gained from meetings with world leaders that the international community hoped for an Indonesian contribution to universal peace in the world.

The President also urged the people to ignore, especially to spread, any belief which has deviated from Islamic teachings because such beliefs will only lead to contradictions within themselves and in the community.

The event was also attended by Constitutional Court President Jimly Asshiddiqie, Religious Minister Maftuh Basyuni, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa, and Minister for State Administrative Reform Taufiq Effendy.

The BKMT chairperson, who is also daughter of Assyafi'iyah's founder KH Abdullah Syafei, Tutty Alawiyah, on the occasion presented the results of the BKMT national congress, which include the continuation of religious propagation in the national education of the people.
