Ahmadinejad insists Tehran is ready to cooperate with 5+1
KARAJ, Dec. 29 (MNA) --Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that Iran is ready to hold talks with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany on common ground for cooperation.
“Iran is ready to talk with the 5+1 group (the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France, and Germany) about cooperation in Istanbul, Brazil and Tehran,” Ahmadinejad told a gathering of people in Karaj on Tuesday.
In early December, Iran and the major powers resumed talks in Geneva after a 14-month hiatus. After the talks, Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili, who represented Iran at the talks, said the 5+1 group has agreed that the next round of talks focus on “common ground for cooperation.”
The meeting is going to be held in Istanbul in late January.
But after the talks the Western countries reneged on the agreement and said that Iran’s nuclear issue should be the focus of the future talks. The United States and some of its allies also imposed new sanctions on Iran to pressure the Iranian government to give in to their demands.
Iran has made it clear that it would never negotiate on its inalienable nuclear rights, but it is ready to hold talks with the major powers on global issues facing the international community such as nuclear non-proliferation, disarmament and the restructuring of major international organizations including the United Nations.
“All parties involved in the talks should recognize Iranian nation’s rights to pave the way for cooperation,” Ahmadinejad said.
He also said that that the powers only have two options open to them.
“The first path is the same path they have taken so far which is adopting resolutions and making threats,” he said, adding they will not achieve any results through this approach.
“When we were not a nuclear state, they could not hinder Iran’s progress through these actions, and now that Iran has become a nuclear state they can not take the nuclear energy away from the Iranian nation,” he explained.
So, if they continue their previous approach, they will reach a deadlock, he asserted.
The second option is that they recognize Iran’s nuclear rights and sit at the negotiating table, he said, emphasizing that “it would benefit all.”
The president went on to say, “If you want to continue your previous path, you should know that the Iranian nation will give the same firm response it has given so far to anyone who has sought to divest the Iranian nation of its rights.”
Ahmadinejad also called economic sanctions ineffective, saying they have failed to force Iran to halt its nuclear activities.
“They say they plan to impose new sanctions on Iran… but if they add 100 more items to the list of sanctions, they can not even slightly weaken the Iranian nation’s resolve,” he said.
“They put political pressure on Iran, mounted propaganda campaign, and imposed back-to-back sanctions to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear state, but Iran won this political battle,” he added.
