Iran`s police chief reiterates no leniency toward synthetic drug traffickers

TEHRAN, Dec. 29 (MNA) --Iran`s judicial bodies will seriously implement a new ratified law which allows execution of any person who smuggles over 30 grams of synthetic drugs,Iranian police chief Ismail Ahmadi Moqaddam said on Tuesday.

Moqaddam told reporters that many smugglers, using the loopholes in the law, still traffic psychoactive drugs, but since the new law was introduced the number of these smugglers has decreased.

The law should be seriously enforced because psychoactive drugs pose a serious threat to the young, he noted.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ahmadi Moqaddam said strict measures, taken by officials and police in the campaign against drugs over the recent years, has caused the volume of drugs smuggled from Iran to other countries to decrease by 50 to 80 percent.

He said until recently the narcotics were mainly produced in Afghanistan but today, with new technology, everyone is capable of producing drugs in his home.

He went on to say that none of major powers, including the United States, approves of the way Britain deals with drug smuggling in Afghanistan.

He added even though Iran has succeeded to prevent drugs smuggling from its borders with Afghanistan, criminals are using other transit routes like Iran-Pakistan borders or the Sea of Oman and the Persian Gulf.

The police commander said if officials agree wall can be built all along Iran’s eastern borders.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he said the new economic situation in the country necessitates that police seriously deal with financial corruption.

There is an anti-corruption squad, but the financial institutions should cooperate in order to expand the squad’s activities.
