Western analytical translations have perverted Oriental art: Iranian Academy of Arts director
TEHRAN, Dec. 29 (MNA) -- The director of the Iranian Academy of Arts (IAA) believes that Western analytical translations have perverted Oriental art.
“One of the major miseries besetting us and which has led our art astray is the (large number) of analyses that others have created without regard for our intents and wishes. Then, we have rendered them (into Persian) and deem them masterpieces,” Ali Mo’allem Damghani told on Monday.
“By translating Western analytical works on fields of art, we have diverted our people from their own traditional styles, making them move in a direction that is not our own,” he added.
He said that the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, and major Iranian media outlets should team up to help people move in the right direction.
“We are in a special era, facing a multi-priority situation,” said poet Mo’allem Damghani, who was appointed as the director of the IAA in December 2009, following the dismissal of painter and architect Mir-Hossein Mousavi, the major rival of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the June 12, 2009 presidential election.
He said that “one of the priorities is to Islamize” those subjects that have been distorted by “intellectuals in order to deflect the East from its natural direction.”
“Fortunately, an awakening of the Eastern people and certain deadlocks besetting the West have both helped us stabilize our situation, but we remain concerned,” he noted.
Iranian officials have launched a campaign against works in the field of the humanities translated from Western sources.
The movement was kicked off in a speech by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei to a gathering of professors and university administrators on August 30, 2009, in which he issued a stern warning about the encroachment of Western humanities into universities and the society. He called on professors to revise this field of study.
