A'LIAN FOREIGN MINISTER VISITING INDONESIA

Jakarta, Aug 11 (ANTARA) - Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith MP is visiting Indonesia from August 11 to 13, according to a press release from the Australian Embassy in Jakarta made available to ANTARA here Monday.

Smith is scheduled to meet Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda and other senior Indonesian ministers, officials and members of Parliament to discuss the extensive bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Australia.

"Our bilateral cooperation is ranging from disaster response and security ties to enhance people-to-people links," Smith said.

The bilateral meeting will be the fourth meeting between the two countries' foreign ministers. Previously, the two foreign ministers met in Bali last December, Perth in last February, and Singapore last month.

During Hassan Wirajuda's visit to Perth in February, both ministers formally exchanged letters to bring into force the Lombok Treaty on security cooperation.

"The Lombok Treaty is a very significant and major step forward in our bilateral relationship, providing a robust legal framework for strengthening extensive security cooperation between Australia and Indonesia," said Smith.

During his visit to Indonesia, Smith is also scheduled to accompany Hassan Wirajuda to South Sulawesi to visit one of the 2,000 junior high schools (SMPs) Australia is building or expanding in Indonesia.

Australia and Indonesia's relationship in education is particularly strong -- 15,000 Indonesian students are currently enrolled in Australian schools, universities and technical college and 300 scholarships are awarded to Indonesian students every year.

"Australia's relationship with Indonesia is strong and broad-ranging, reflecting our shared interests and commitment to advance cooperation on many bilateral, regional and global issues of importance to us both," Smith explained.

Smith will deliver a speech to outline Australia's first-rate bilateral relationship with Indonesia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta on Monday (Aug 11).
