PAPUA POLICE QUESTIONING 11 OFFICERS OVER FATAL SHOOTING IN WAMENA
Jayapura, Aug 11 (ANTARA) - Papua police are currently questioning 11 of their officers and three civilians over the fatal shooting of a resident during a rally to mark "Indigenous People Day" in Wamena town, Jayawijaya district, on Saturday (Aug 9), a spokesman said.
Artinus Tabuni (41), a local resident, was fatally hit by a bullet when police fired warning shots before pulling down a "morning star" flag of the separatist Free Papua Organixation (OPM) which had been hoisted side by side with the national Indonesian and United Nations flags at the rally on a field in Wamena.
Police were now questioning 11 police officers and three civilians in the case but the numbers could increase in the days ahead, said chief public relations officer at the Papua Provincial Police Headquarters, Senior Commissioner Agus Riyanto, on Monday.
So far none of the people questioned had been named a suspect, he said.
Police would continue the investigation until the case had been solved, Riyanto said adding that those being questioned were police officers and civilians who were present at the Indigenous People Day gathering organized by the Papua Customary Council.
Asked about the situation in Wamena following the incident, Riyanto, who had been in Wamena since Monday morning, said it was normal but, as a precautionary measure, the police had posted two platoons of Mobile Brigade troops in the town.
