WIRAJUDA, SMITH TO INAUGURATE 1000TH SCHOOL BUILT WITH A'LIAN AID

Jakarta, Aug 11 (ANTARA) - Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith is scheduled to visit Gowa district, South Sulawesi, on Tuesday to inaugurate the 1000th school building set up under the frame of an Australia-Indonesia Basic Education Program (AIBEP).

"The school is part of 2,000 to be built in all provinces in Indonesia," Smith said in a joint press conference with his Indonesian counterpart, Hassan Wirajuda, here on Monday.

During his visit in South Sulawesi, Smith will be accompanied by Wirajuda. The two ministers will jointly inaugurate a building that is to house SMPN 4 (Public Junior High School 4) in Pallagga, Gowa district. The activity will be the symbolic inauguration of 1,000 school buildings already set up under the AIBEP since 2006.
Wirajuda said the construction of the school buildings reflected the close ties existing not only between the two governments but also between the two peoples.

AIBEP was designed to give Indonesian children access to quality education. Under the program, the Australian government would build or expand 2,000 schools in remote areas in Indonesia until the end of 2009.

While in South Sulawesi, the two ministers would also inspect a cacao cultivation project developed under the Smallholder's Agribusiness Development Initiative (SADI).

SADI is an Indonesia-Australia cooperation program designed to help promote farmers' know-how in a number of eastern Indonesian provinces, including South Sulawesi.

Smith is in Indonesia for a three-day visit. This is his first official visit to Indonesia since becoming foreign minister last December.
