RI'S CPO PRODUCTION IN 2009 PROJECTED AT 19.4 MILLION TONS
Jakarta, Aug 11 (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Anton Apriantono said Indonesia was projected to produce 19.4 million tons of crude palm oil (CPO) in 2009.
"Indonesia's annual CPO production at present is about 17 million tons. Oil palm plants which were still young in the past few years are now bearing fruit," the minister said after outlining the government's agricultural polices at Trade Ministry working conference here on Monday.
He said CPO production would increase in line with the expansion of oil palm plantations in the country that had been taking place since 2007.
"Since 2007, the area of the country's oil palm plantations have increased by 1.9 million hectares. The area widened by 500,000 hectares each year," the minister said.
Anton said plantation expansion also created problems in the form of seed scarcities. "We are facing a problems with the availability of seeds."
He said that plantation expansion should also be accompanied by market expansion strategies.
"CPO is one of our principal export commodities so that we have to be clever in playing a role so that its price will remain stable," he added.
Indonesia and Malaysia have agreed to increase CPO suply to their domestic markets as their real transportation sectors are being encouraged to substitute bio-diesel for fossil fuels.
