US steps up spying on Brazil, Turkey due to their Iran policy: source

TEHRAN, Jan. 5 (MNA)-- According to some intelligence sources, the U.S. has intensified its espionage on Turkey and Brazil after these two countries adopted an independent policy in the nuclear standoff between Iran and the West, the Irannuc.ir reported on Monday.

According to a May 2010 report by Wayne Madsen Report, the U.S. intelligence agencies have launched new intelligence operations against Turkey and Brazil after they found out that Ankara and Brasilia do not intend to follow the U.S. policies on Iran.

The report also says that the U.S. administration has issued the permission for intelligence gathering against the two countries.

Washington believes that Brazil and Turkey had been in covert consultations with China and Russia to persuade at least a veto-wielding power to oppose the Resolution 1929 against Iran.

Turkey and Brazil were strongly opposed to the adoption of a new resolution against Iran and believed that the Tehran declaration proposed an effective mechanism for nuclear fuel swap between Iran and the Western suppliers.

On May 17, Iran, Turkey, and Brazil issued a declaration, according to which Iran would ship 1200 kilograms of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey to be exchanged for 120 kilograms of 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel to power the Tehran research reactor.

The provisions of this agreement were close to what the Western countries had previously called for, but the U.S. and its allies ignored the agreement and approved the Resolution 1929 against Iran on June 9. Turkey and Brazil voted against the resolution.

Then Brazilian President Lula da Silva and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan voiced strong opposition to the U.S.-backed sanctions and said that the Tehran declaration should have been given a chance.
