HOISTING 'BINTANG KEJORA' FLAG ACT OF SEPARATISM : MILY CHIEF

Jakarta, Aug 12 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) Commander Gen Djoko Santoso said the hoisting of the "Bintang Kejora" (Morning Star) flag in Papua recently proved that separatists were still active in the country's most-eastern province.

"Flying a flag other than the Red-and-White in this republic is a form of separatissm," the TNI chief said at a seminar here on Tuesday.

He was referring to the hoisting of the Bintang Kejora flag in Wamena in Papua's Jayawijaya district which sparked an incident in which a local resident was killed on Saturday.

In the incident, police fired warning shots before pulling down the Bintang Kerjora flag which had been hoisted along with the Red-and-White and UN flags at a rally organized by the Papua Customary Council (DAP) to observe World Indigenous Day on Saturday (Aug.9).

A group of people hurled stones at police and Wamena Resort Police Chief Adj Sr Com Azis was hit by an arrow in his shoe.

On what the TNI would do in connection with the incident, Santoso said the military had no plan yet to send reinforcements to Papua. "The incident is a legal matter so that we will leave it to the law enforcers," he said.

On Monday, the Criminal Investigation Department of the National Police Headquarters sent a team to Papua to help local police investigate the death of Anthonius Tabuni (40) who was hit by a bullet during Saturday's flag incident in Wamena.
