‘Istanbul could begin a new process’
TEHRAN, Jan. 15 (MNA) -- The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said that the upcoming talks between Iran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany) could be the beginning of a new process if the 5+1 group adopts a strategic view of the talks.
SNSC Secretary Saeed Jalili, who is Iran’s main nuclear negotiator, made the remarks in an interview with the French daily Le Figaro published on Thursday.
The interview came ahead of the planned talks between Iran and the six major powers, which will be held in Istanbul on January 21 and 22.
Iran is serious about the talks, is pursuing the negotiations based on common ground, and has a strategic view of the talks, Jalili stated.
If the 5+1 group has the same view of the negotiations, hopefully, the talks will yield good results, he added.
Jalili also said, “In Geneva, we clearly agreed that the (next round of) talks would focus on common ground for cooperation, and common ground may include a range of subjects.”
Over the past few years, Iran has taken many confidence-building measures, and now the West must gain the Iranian nation’s confidence, he noted.
He added, “The confrontational approach has never borne any result and is both fruitless and costly for them.”
“Today, the potential of the Islamic Republic of Iran in various areas is undeniable, and talks on cooperation and then cooperation based on common ground would be beneficial for all,” the SNSC secretary stated.
Commenting on Iran’s invitation to international representatives to visit its nuclear facilities, Jalili said that the move shows the transparency of Iran’s nuclear activities.
Iran has invited some members of the UN Security Council, the European Union, the Group of 77, and the Non-Aligned Movement to visit the Natanz uranium enrichment facility and the Arak heavy water reactor on January 15 and 16. Iran also said the visitors can be accompanied by nuclear experts.
