Toyota to recall 1.7 million vehicles worldwide

TOKYO, Jan. 26 Kyodo - Toyota Motor Corp. has decided to recall a total of 1,277,390 units of the Noah, the RAV4L and other models in Japan due to possible leakage of fuel, it reported to the transport ministry Wednesday.
As Toyota will also recall some 411,000 units of such models as the Lexus IS250 and the Avensis overseas, the total number of vehicles to be recalled comes to around 1.7 million.
There have been no accidents reported involving the vehicles concerned.
The recall on the domestic market alone amounts to the second largest on record since Japan introduced the recall system in 1969, according to the ministry.
In 2005, Toyota recalled nearly 1.3 million Corolla cars, marking the largest recall on record in Japan.
The latest recall also follows more than 8 million vehicles Toyota has recalled worldwide since late 2009 for glitches such as defective floor mats and sticky gas pedals.
The total number of affected vehicles on the domestic market includes 74,590 units of the high-end Crown, Mark X and Lexus IS250 models.
According to the report filed with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, 19 models produced between May 2000 and August 2008 are subject to the domestic recall.
The Toyota vehicles in question may leak fuel as the fuel pipes could crack or the connection valves could become loose as the thickness of the fuel pipes and the strength of the tightening valves vary, the report said.
Fuel pipes used in the vehicles were manufactured by a single maker.
Analysts estimate the latest recall will cost Toyota tens of billion of yen. While Toyota has set aside reserves to cover recall costs, its finances may be affected, they said.
As the reported glitches occur after long-term use, the recall covers vehicles produced over a long period of time, analysts said.
The recall report follows Toyota's announcement Monday that its worldwide group sales increased 8 percent in 2010 over the previous year to 8,418,000 units, topping U.S. carmaker General Motors Co.'s 8,389,769 vehicles and enabling Toyota to retain its status as the world's largest automaker for the third consecutive year.
