Bird flu suspected at another chicken farm in Miyazaki Pref.

MIYAZAKI, Japan, Jan. 30 Kyodo - Dead chickens found at a poultry farm in Miyazaki Prefecture are suspected to have been infected with bird flu as they tested positive in preliminary testing, local officials said Sunday amid a spread of the highly pathogenic disease among local farms.
The town of Takanabe, which has 26 chicken farms with a total of 680,000 chickens, is still waiting for detailed test results to confirm whether the dead birds at the farm with 40,000 chickens actually comprise the season's sixth case of bird flu outbreak in the prefecture.
Already over 500,000 chickens have been culled in the southwestern Japan prefecture since Jan. 22 as part of the disease control efforts after infections were confirmed in the cities of Miyazaki and Nobeoka, as well as the towns of Shintomi, Tsuno and Kawaminami.
Miyazaki's livestock industry has already been devastated by a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak last year that led to the culling of 290,000 cows and pigs.
