China, Japan eye late Feb. talks on maritime incidents

BEIJING, Feb. 1 Kyodo -China and Japan are considering a vice-ministerial meeting in late February in Tokyo to discuss measures to prevent an occurrence of maritime incidents similar to one last September that seriously damaged bilateral ties, diplomatic sources said Tuesday.
With the ''strategic dialogue,'' the two sides hope to improve relations ahead of a trilateral summit among China, Japan and South Korea set for May in Tokyo and a foreign ministerial meeting of the three set for March in Kyoto, the sources said.
The two countries also hope the dialogue will pave the way for a visit to China by Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara, possibly in the spring.
It will be the first time Tokyo and Beijing have held their strategic dialogue since a session in June 2009 in Beijing.
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun and Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Kenichiro Sasae are expected to attend the envisaged dialogue
