South Korea President Lee calls for utmost efforts to bring Olympics to PyeongChang city

SEOUL (Yonhap) - President Lee Myung-bak called on his government Monday to step up efforts for a successful bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, his office Cheong Wa Dae said.
South Korea's eastern alpine city of PyeongChang is seeking to play host to the games, its third bid to do so.
An inspection team from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is scheduled to visit the city from next Monday through Sunday.
"Bringing the Winter Olympics to PyeongChang is an important national task," Lee said in a meeting with his senior secretaries, according to Cheong Wa Dae spokeswoman Kim Hee-jung.
Lee urged his aides and other government officials to redouble efforts for a successful bid, she added.
South Korea's bidding committee submitted its formal bid file to the IOC last month.
PyeongChang, about 180 kilometers east of Seoul, is competing with Munich, Germany, and Annecy, France. It came up short in its two previous bids against Vancouver, Canada, and Sochi, Russia.
The election for the 2018 host city will take place at an IOC meeting in Durban, South Africa, on July 6, after the IOC conducts on-site inspections of all three candidate cities this month and next month.
