Turkey firm to find solution to Iran’s nuclear issue: Turkish president

TEHRAN, Feb.13(MNA) -- Turkish President Abdullah Gul said on Saturday that his country is seeking to help resolve the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program through dialogue.

Gul made the remarks during an interview in Ankara ahead of his four-day official visit to Iran which starts on Sunday.

Gul said Iran is a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and therefore the dispute over its nuclear issue must be settled through negotiations.

And Turkey will continue its “facilitating activities” in this regard, he asserted.

On January 20 and 21, Istanbul hosted a meeting between Iran and the 5+1 group (the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany).

Moreover, on May 17, 2010, Iran, Turkey, and Brazil issued a declaration, according to which Iran was to ship 1200 kilograms of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey to be exchanged for 120 kilograms of 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel to power the Tehran research reactor, which produces radioisotopes for cancer treatment. According to the agreement, the exchange was to take place in Turkey under the supervision of the IAEA and Iran.
