Public support for Kan's Cabinet hits all-time low of 19.9%+
TOKYO, Feb. 12 Kyodo - The support rating for Prime Minister Naoto Kan's Cabinet dropped to an all-time low of 19.9 percent in the latest Kyodo News survey released Saturday, down 12.3 percentage points from the previous poll a month ago.
The last time the approval rate for any Cabinet has sunk below 20 percent in a
Kyodo News survey was just before Kan's predecessor, Yukio Hatoyama, resigned
due to his failure to resolve a dispute over a U.S. military base relocation
and money scandals last June, when the rate was just 19.1 percent.
The telephone survey conducted Friday and Saturday showed the disapproval
rating for the Cabinet accelerating to 63.4 percent from 53.9 percent primarily
due to what is seen as lack of leadership on the part of Kan, president of the
ruling Democratic Party of Japan.
On other issues, the poll found that 52.8 percent of respondents want DPJ
bigwig Ichiro Ozawa to resign as a Diet member over a funds scandal, against
58.7 percent in the prior survey.
It also showed that another 24.4 percent are in favor of Ozawa's departure from
the DPJ, which he also once headed, compared with 22.4 percent previously.
Ozawa, who has denied any wrongdoing, was indicted Jan. 31 by court-appointed
lawyers acting on an inquest panel's decision last September to overturn an
earlier decision by prosecutors not to charge the politician due to a lack of
evidence.
As for Kan's call for bipartisan talks on tax and social security reforms, 79.8
percent said opposition parties should agree to start such talks, far eclipsing
13.3 percent who said they do not need to.
The survey also found that the support rate for the DPJ, which swept to power
in September 2009, stood at 20.9 percent, down from 22.7 percent in the
preceding poll, while that for the No. 1 opposition Liberal Democratic Party
came to 23.7 percent, a slight retreat from 24.1 percent.
The difference in the support rating between the two parties expanded to 2.8
points from 1.4 points.
Opposition Your Party garnered 7.6 percent support, the New Komeito party 3.3
percent, the Japanese Communist Party 3.0 percent, the Social Democratic Party
1.5 percent, the Sunrise Party of Japan 0.5 percent, the Renaissance Party 0.4
percent and the People's New Party 0.3 percent, according to the Kyodo survey.
The telephone survey covered 1,445 randomly selected households with eligible
voters and valid responses were received from 1,013 individuals.
