Turkish president arrives in Tehran for talks

Tehran, Feb 14, IRNA - Turkish President Abdullah Gul arrived on Sunday afternoon in Tehran heading a high-ranking delegation on a four-day visit at the invitation of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi welcomed the Turkish president and his companions upon their arrival at Mehrabad International airport.

The official welcoming ceremony for the Turkish president will be held on Monday morning in presence of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

He is to confer with high ranking Iranian officials on expansion of mutual and regional ties as well as international developments.

Besides talks and meetings with senior Iranian officials, he would meet and confer with Secretary General of the Economic Cooperation Organization and the Inter-Parliamentary Union of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

Addressing a press conference at Ankara Airport prior to his departure, Gul said, “I am the first president of Turkey to visit Iran in nine years. My visit to Iran is the first official visit by a president and due to the same reason the visit is of special importance.”

Cevdet Yilmaz, a number of Turkish parliamentarians and governors general of Turkish provinces bordering Iran as well as 100 Turkish industrialists and merchants, university lecturers, representatives of government institutions and major Turkish media.
