Musharraf should demonstrate maturity and leave: Zardari

co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari said President Pervez Musharraf should "demonstrate maturity" and resign, maintaining that he has only two options -– to quit or face impeachmentproceedings in parliament.

He said the provincial assemblies, which are part of the President's electoral college, had passed resolutions with an overwhelming majority asking Musharraf to seek a vote ofconfidence in parliament.

"We have been requesting him to go and he should also demonstrate maturity and leave," Zardari told Dawn Newschannel in an interview.

Asked if the President was willing to step down before the coalition launched impeachment proceedings, Zardari said: "There are two schools of thought. One school says that in a battlefield ... you always leave the room for exit so that youlose the least and the opposition has a chance to retreat.

"And the other school is that let him confront and let parliament do what other parliaments have done to the dictators of the world." He added: "From a position where people would defend him (Musharraf) and ask why should he go, everybody is asking today why isn't he going. That was done by design. We have managed to bring it to this position." Replying to a question about the army's possible response to the impeachment move, Zardari said the army "has nopolitical position and that's enshrined in our constitution".

He said the P.P.P.-led coalition did not want to put the army to the test and "at the end of the day, democracy wouldhave won one way or the other".

Zardari made it clear that he was not a candidate for the presidency and that the parties in the coalition would choosea nominee for the post.

However, he added that the P.P.P., by virtue of being thebiggest party, would have an edge over others in the matter.

To a question about the Inter-Services Intelligence (I.S.I.) agency, he said it was still working under the PrimeMinister.

Zardari described the recent controversy over an official notification that placed the I.S.I. under the Interior Ministry as a "clerical error" and a notification that "was worded wrongly". PTI RHL AMT
