Maruti to open 110 new driving schools; 10 research institutes

Suzuki plans to set up 8-10 new Institutes of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) and 110 Maruti Driving Schools (MDS) across India by 2010, with an aim to train five lakh peoplewithin the next three years.

"There is an urgent need for creating awareness about road safety. As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility activities, we have planned to set up 8-10 IDTRs and 110 MDSs by 2010 across the country," Maruti Suzuki General Manager R KParimoo told PTI.

On fees, he said, it could be as low as Rs 100 per day and as high as Rs 600-700 per day depending on the financial background of people, who enroll for the training, and theprogrammes.

The company currently runs two IDTRs in Delhi and 40 MDSs at various locations and has trained about 4.5 lakh peopleover the last 10 years.

"Our aim is to train at least five lakh people in thenext three years," Parimoo said.

To start with, the company would set up four IDTRs by the first quarter of next year, of which two would come up inHaryana and one each in Gujarat and Uttarakhand.

"We are also in advanced stages of talks with four morestates -- Bihar, Rajasthan Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Some progress have already been made and soon we will go tothese states as well," he said.

These institutes would impart training on various courses, like two-day refresher's programme to 45-day heavycommercial vehicle learning programme.

On the kind of investment, Parimoo said: "Lands are allotted by state governments and they will bear the capital amount. We will only provide equipments, simulators, cars and will manage the institutes thereafter." The cost of setting up one such IDTRs usually vary in the range of Rs 6-15 crore depending on the facilities provided,he added.

"After the initial investment, our aim is to make the IDTRs self sustaining. It is really pleasing that both theinstitutes in Delhi are self sustaining," he said.

On MDSs, Parimoo said, the company would be setting up 35more such schools by March, 2009.

"We are planning to increase the number of such MDSs to 150 by 2010 and our focus will be on Tier II & III cities," hesaid.

Usually MDSs are set up through the company's dealers network, costing about Rs 40-60 lakh per school, excludingproperty price.

The company spends about Rs 10 crore on an average forthe promotion of MDS across India.
