Omar: I will quit LS if protesters brutalised

take a hardline stand on the Amarnath row, two mainstream Kashmiri parties Sunday voiced concern over "excessive use of force" against protestors with the National Conference leader Omar Abdullah even threatening to resign as M.P. if there isno check.

"If the situation continues the way it is and if unbridled use of force by police is done against agitators like in Kashmir I will have no option but to resign from theParliament and I will do it," Abdullah told reporters.

Seeking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention to resolve the crisis, Abdullah called for a sustained dialogue between the coordination committee of various separatist groups and Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti to help resolve theshrine land row.

"Talks between the coordination committee and the Sangarsh Samiti should be a sustained one to find an acceptable solution to the crisis generated by the landtransfer row," he told reporters here.

The People's Democratic Party (P.D.P.) stepped up its demand for a probe into the "killing of unarmed protestors" in Kashmir and wanted the Centre to renew the peace and resolution process through a purposeful dialogue with allsections of the society including Hurriyat Conference.

"Government of India should renew, with fresh resolve and a sense of urgency, the peace and resolution process through a purposeful dialogue with all sectons of the society, including the Hurriyat conference," a resolution adopted at a meeting ofthe P.D.P.'s Political Affairs Committee (P.A.C.) here said.

Presided over party Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the P.A.C. termed the present situation in the state as very critical saying "All of us must sink the differences andrespond to it beyond the party politics.

The P.D.P. resolution said "The Government of India must with political courage revive the peace initiative launched by then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vapayee and carried forward by (Prime Minister) Manmiohan Singh and which had worked well till 2005 to the great satisfaction of all sections of the society." Abdullah while responding to remarks by hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani to all M..Ps to resign or face social boycott, said, "I respect the elderly Geelani but would like to ask him what he (Geelani) was doing when Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was spearheading a movement in Kashmir." Abdullah said the crisis could not be resolved in one go. "The talks cannot be fruitful if the dialogue between the two sides is held once and resumed after 15 days. It should bea sustained dialogue," he added.

He said the present crisis in the state was a result of misgivings about transfer of land to the shrine board. "The people of Jammu are now claiming that they have been discriminated against by successive government during the past 60 years. It can all be sorted out provided we are able to sitand talk," Abdullah said.
